The dose of sedative is titrated according to the patient’s response. A small dose of sedative is initially administered, and after it is allowed some time to take effect, the dentist evaluates if the sedation level is satisfactory or an additional dose must be given. Subsequent doses are given incrementally until the patient is adequately sedated. The most common anti-anxiety sedatives used for IV sedation are midazolam (or another benzodiazepine) and propofol.
